Game: Colonial Beach vs. Manassas Park
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
PREVIEW: That 2-8 season is a distant memory now. Third-year head coach David Coccoli has the Cougars looking to be a contender in the Bull Run District after season-opening wins over Central (32-14) and Washington & Lee (24-21).
IT’S ON: The visiting Drifters won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. They have possession at their own 15 yard line.
THAT WAS QUICK: Three plays and a punt for the Drifters. And the punt didn’t accomplish a whole lot. Manassas Park has the ball for the first time at the Colonial Beach 44 yard line.
ON THE MOVE: The Cougars, who are averaging 28 points per game this season, are already at the 10 yard line. It’s third and 5. Jacob Wright has 6 carries for 31 yards on the team’s first possession. Including a first-down run that has MP at the 4 yard line.
ALL THE WRIGHT MOVES: That wasn’t Tom Cruise out there. It was Jacob Wright. He put the Cougars ahead 6-0 on a 2-yard run with 5:36 left in the first quarter. The missed PAT probably won’t make a difference by the time this one’s over. The Drifters may not score tonight especially after the fumble that just gave the ball back to Manassas Park at the 22.
END OF THE FIRST QUARTER: MANASSAS PARK 6, COLONIAL BEACH 0
ALL THE WRONG MOVES: A fumble by Jacob Wright has given the ball back to Colonial Beach at the 43 yard line. The Drifters are driving. The Cougars will need a big stop on 4th down at the 31.
BIG HIT: Ryan Kolb came up with the tackle to prevent a first down as the Drifters turned the ball over on downs. The Cougars take over at the 31.
NOWHERE TO RUN: The Cougars didn’t do much with that last possession and were forced to punt. Colonial Beach has moved the ball into MP territory. The Cougar defense will be tested again.
NO WORRIES: The Drifers are wandering aimlessly about the field with no apparent direction in mind. Forward, backward. They are all over the place. And, as a result, they will once again punt.
HALFTIME: MANASSAS PARK 6, COLONIAL BEACH 0:
TEAM JACOB: In Manassas Park, there is a new Team Jacob. After rushing for 239 yards against Washington & Lee last week and 250 against Central, Jacob Wright is bigger in these parts than Twilight. And he’s done all that without a full moon. Wright has 13 carries for 69 yards and one touchdown at halftime, giving him more than 500 for the season.
OVER AND OUT: Ryan Kolb sprinted 33 yards on a counter play and John Byrd just squirmed in from the 1 to give the Cougars a pair of touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the third quarter. It’s 20-0 at Cougar Stadium. Manassas Park is on its way to a 3-0 start—the program’s best start since 2005.
END OF THIRD QUARTER: MANASSAS PARK 20, COLONIAL BEACH 0
TEAM JACOB, THE SEQUEL: Jacob Wright has 18 carries for 103 yards and 1 touchdown. Wright has 592 yards for the season.
TEAM JACOB VS. TEAM KOLB: Ryan Kolb just sprinted down the left sideline for a 35-yard touchdown. He’s run for 91 yards and a pair of TDs tonight. It’s 27-0 Manassas Park. 6:24 remaining.
MILLS CUP CHAMPS: The Potomac Nationals have won the Carolina League Mills Cup championship for the second time in three seasons with a 2-1 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash tonight at Pfitzner Stadium.
THERE WON’T BE A RALLY: Manassas Park’s defense has secured it’s first shutout of the season.
FINAL SCORE: MANASSAS PARK 27, COLONIAL BEACH 0.
