GAME TIME BLOG: WOODBRIDGE (5-4, 4-1) at GAR-FIELD (6-3, 4-1)
By DAVE UTNIK
Welcome to the News & Messenger’s Under the Lights battle for playoff position edition of the Game Time Blog.
Game: Woodbridge at Gar-Field
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Weather: Bundle up. It’s getting cold.
PREVIEW
THE PLAYOFF PICTURE?:
Amazingly, Woodbridge (5-4, 4-1) after an 0-3 start and Gar-Field (6-3, 4-1) are both headed to the Northwest Region Division 6 playoffs. That is more than enough evidence that six teams is too many. Yet the Virginia High School League wants every team to feel like it has a chance to win a state title so it has watered down the postseason so much that even Osbourn Park (3-6, 2-4) still has an outside chance. Really? The three legitimate state caliber teams—Battlefield, Hylton and Colonial Forge—are also assured spots with the top two receiving first-round byes.
Things are just as silly in Division 5, where Potomac (4-5, 2-3) is still in contention if the Panthers can defeat Freedom. Outside of Osbourn and Mountain View, this division has no serious state title contenders.
JUST TRY TO STOP ‘EM:
The Vikings’ remarkable turnaround has a lot to do with the play of Jaylen Avent, who is closing in on a 1,000-yard season. Quarterback Corey Taylor has completed 66 of 116 pass attempts for 809 yards—many of those to tight end Michael Herrity and receiver Logan Farrar.
GRINDING IT OUT
Gar-Field has experienced most of its success on the ground with running back Shakeem Copeland producing 10 rushing touchdowns. He is the first to score 10 in a season since Bryce Miller had 13 in 2007. Watch out for DeVonte Piggott in the secondary though. He has over 300 receiving yards, nearly half of quarterback Ryan Mason’s total.
RIVALRY?
Okay, this is supposed to be one of the nation’s biggest high school football rivalries. There is a trophy and everything. So why aren’t there more than a couple hundred people here? The bleachers on both sides are 80 percent empty for kickoff. Guess everyone is across the street checking out Megamind at the AMC Theaters. It did get 3 stars after all.
WHAT’S NEXT:
The winner of tonight’s game is actually sort of a loser. They get to travel 250 miles to face Franklin County in the Northwest Region playoffs. The loser visits Battlefield, which isn’t much more of a treat.
AND WE’RE OFF:
The Woodbridge Vikings took the opening kickoff and did nothing with it. Three plays and a punt. Now it’s Gar-Field’s turn.
NICE START:
The Indians are playing as if they want that long road trip. Shakeem Copeland already has two first downs and Gar-Field has moved the ball to Vikings 26 yard line.
GOING NOWHERE:
Actually, the Indians wound up going backwards, all the way to the WB 40. That resulted in a punt. Woodbridge has the ball for the second time following a touchback at the 20 yard line.
PUNTFEST 2010
Three possessions, three punts. At this rate we might have a scoreless tie. Who would get the trophy then?
Make that four possessions and four punts—two for each team.
Ho hum, another punt is on the way. Of course, this time G-F botched a fair catch and fumbled the ball back to the Vikings at midfield. These are playoff teams?
END OF THE FIRST QUARTER
Woodbridge 0, Gar-Field 0
FINALLY, A BIG PLAY
G-F senior Austin Copeland picks off Corey Taylor at the 26. That’s sort of like a long punt right?
And the Indians promptly lose six yards on first down making it 2nd and 16 at the 20. That is followed by an incomplete pass.
So we’ll have another punt. There’s still time to get your tickets to Megamind. There’s probably an 8 p.m. showing.
GUESS WHAT’S COMING
If you guessed a Woodbridge punt, you have been paying attention to the recurring theme.
COULD THIS BE THE DRIVE?
Shakeem Copeland just gained nine yards up the middle—the longest play from scrimmage on the ground tonight. The Indians are on their own 36 yard line. It’s the closest thing to a drive that either team has put together yet.
STILL ON THE MOVE
Ryan Mason scrambled up the middle for a big first down and the Vikings aided the drive with a face mask penalty. Gar-Field is on the verge of scoring a touchdown. It’s 2nd and 10 at the Woodbridge 10.
OUCH
Woodbridge linebacker Daruis Parson just put a smackdown on Shakeem Copeland at the 10. It’s third down.
Make that fourth down after a dropped swing pass.
The Indians are attempting a 26-yard field goal.
No, they aren’t. A Woodbridge penalty moved the ball 5 yards closer to the end zone and GF is now going for it on 4th down and 2 at the 5.
No, wait. Now they are going to kick a field goal.
WE HAVE POINTS ON THE BOARD
With 3:26 left in the first half, it is no longer scoreless. Tyler Brooks connected on a 21-yard field goal. Gar-Field 3, Woodbridge 0.
TWO MINUTE DRILL
Maybe Mike Shanahan should try Corey Taylor at QB for the Redskins’ 2-minute drill. He just found Logan Farrar for an 18-yard reception, It’s 1st and 10 at the G-F 29.
He followed that up with a 28-yard pass to Mike Herrity. Suddenly it’s 1st and goal at the 1.
Make that 1st and goal from the 6 following a false start.
MORE POINTS ON THE BOARD
Darius Parson runs it in for a Woodbridge touchdown. With 41 second left in the first half it’s now the Vikings 7, Gar-Field 3.
Corey check your cell. I think that’s the Shanahans calling.
HALFTIME: WOODBRIDGE 7, GAR-FIELD 3.
We will now pause 20 minutes for senior night celebrations at Gar-Field.
WE’RE BACK
The second half has begun with Woodbridge kicking off the the Indians. Gar-Field has the ball at its own 27 yard line.
SECOND HALF, SAME AS THE FIRST
The Indians drive ended without a punt. But only because they fumbled. Woodbridge’s Jordan Hairston recovered, giving the Vikings a first down at the Gar-Field 43.
Of course, Woodbridge did nothing with the field position. The punt everyone expected is in the air.
Gar-Field takes over at the Woodbridge 9 yard line.
Well, at least they made it to the 25 before having to punt. That’s forward progress right?
The Vikings have the ball again at their own 43. Pretty good field position with the ball and the lead.
IT WAS GOOD FIELD POSITION
Woodbridge’s first running play of the drive lost six yard. It’s 2nd at 16 at the 37. Maybe they’re waiting for the final two minutes of the game to do something. It’s punting time.
Gar-Field will try again from its 19. There are 3 minutes left in the third quarter.
IT’S RAINING YELLOW HANKIES
Gar-Field didn’t even get a play off before it wazs penalized five yards for a false start. And that led to an interception.
Woodbridge’s Evrett Edwards picked off Ryan Mason at the 31.
It’s 1st and 10 Woodbridge.
HERE WE GO AGAIN
The Vikings went backwards, losing six yards on three plays. Now they will punt it away again. This time Devonte Piggott returns it to the Indians 25.
And, naturally, they too are going the wrong way. Ryan Mason just got sacked by Darius Parson, who might be the best player on the field toinight. Gar-Field punts from its own 10.
Woodbridge has possession at the 35. Maybe the Vikings should give the ball to Parson on offense.
END OF THE THIRD QUARTER DURING WHICH NOTHING HAPPENED EXCEPT A BUNCH OF PUNTS, PENALTIES AND A SACK
Woodbridge 7, Gar-Field 3
MOTIVATION?
The G-F offensive line just received a stern talking to by one of the coaches. Actually it was very stern and highly animated. “Stop rolling your eyes and do your job” could be heard all the way in the press box.
PERHAPS, THEY DIDN’T LISTEN
Ryan Mason just got sacked again, two plays after the stern talking to. It’s 3rd and 11 at the Gar-Field 15. A punt will follow briefly.
WOODBRIDGE IN COMMAND
The Vikings gave the ball to Parson and good things happened—nine yards on first down. Woodbridge has a chance to either run out the clock or put the game away with a score. There are 8 minutes left. The Vikings have the ball at their own 45.
TICK TOCK
This is becoming a time-consuming and yard-consuming drive, exactly what the Vikings need to win and earn a 250 mile trip to Franklin County. Wisely, they are keeping the ball on the ground. 5:36 to go. Ball at the Gar-Field 35.
Parson again. This time for six yards. Under 5 minutes.
The Vikings wound up taking more than 5 minutes off the clock before facing 4th and 7 at the 29. Decision time. They’ll go for it.
ONE LAST CHANCE
G-F’s Lawrence Johnson came up with a big sack on fourth down, giving the Indians the ball at their own 35. 3:14 to go.
THAT’S DOING THE JOB
It was a delayed reaction, but Mason had time to find DeVonte Piggott for a huge pass completion on first down to the Woodbridge 30. Here come the Indians.
ANOTHER FLAG
After moving to the 21, a promising drive has been pushed back 5 yards with another delay of game penalty. The Indians are back to the 26. But it’s now second and 15. Drama.
TIME TO THROW
The offensive line has gotten the message. They gave Mason time to drop back and he found Dana McAfee in the end zone for a 26 yard TD pass. 2:15 to play. Gar-Field 10, Woodbridge 7.
WARM UP THE BUS
Unless Corey Taylor can put together another two-minute scoring drive, it will be Gar-Field heading to Franklin County, 2:10 remaining. Woodbridge is at its own 28 after recovering its own fumbled kickoff.
A defensive holding penalty on G-F has helped WB move the ball to midfield. 1:35 to go.
And a 44-yard pass from Taylor to Logan Farrar has the Vikings at the G-F 9 yard line. 1st and goal 1:25 remaining.
Three running plays netted, four yards. It’s 4th and goal at the 5. Woodbridge will probably try a game-tying FG with 13 seconds left.
