Stat that may interest only me

I keep hearing a lot about Osbourn Park’s defense and the claim by Yellow Jackets fans that it’s the best in the state.

Perhaps statistically, yes, the numbers look nice. They’ve allowed just 89 points this year. Very impressive. Until you look at the competition.

Osbourn Park played in a pretty crummy Cardinal District this year, a league that has in the past been competitive. This season has not been that way, though.

OP allowed just 4.8 points per game against Cardinal foes. But check out what the Jackets did against playoff teams: allowing 14.0 ppg in four regular season games.

Worse, they only scored an average of 11.0 (they were 1-2 in those games). Only by adding in Monday’s win over a clearly inferrior Riverbend team (out of the clearly inferrior Commonwealth) does OP’s offense out-score their opponents (72 points for to 69 points allowed).

Yes, OP held Woodbridge to nine points. And they held Battlefield to 14. But they scored just three themselves in those two games. OP also barely edged Division 5 third seed Osbourn 28-26.

So yeah, the Jackets’ defense looks great against sub-par teams like Freedom, Forest Park and Potomac. But when they match up against the teams with actual offenses, look out.
