Things you didn’t know… 9/22

Welcome to this week’s edition of Things you didn’t know before reading this.

It was a good week for two of the little schools from the area as Pope John Paul the Great earned its first varsity win in school history and Manassas Park filled the win column for the first time this year as well.

The Wolves (1-2) beat Fairfax Home School 38-27 and had contributions from all facets of Saturday’s game.

Tyler Perroots averaged more than 12 yards a carry in the game, finishing with 150 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Pope John’s quarterback Logan Sullivan also had a good day, running for 119 yards and throwing for another 130 on just four completions. He was responsible for two scores, a rushing touchdown and one through the air.

Meanwhile, Manassas Park (1-2) edged host Colonial Beach 21-18 thanks to 250 rushing yards as a team.

John Byrd had 103 of those yards to lead the Cougars. Colonial Beach shot itself in the foot by missing all three of its extra point attempts, the difference in the game.

Regardless, here’s to continued success to the smaller clubs. Keep it going guys.

> There’s really not a whole lot to update this week that hasn’t been already. I will say the result from the OP-Hylton game completely surprised me. I thought Battlefield provided the blueprint on how to beat Dominique Terrell and the Yellow Jackets, but the Bulldogs didn’t seem to follow the same plan.

Maybe I don’t have a keen enough eye for it, but I didn’t see Hylton try anything that Battlefield did. I especially think Hylton respected Terrell’s arm more than it should have. Terrell is much more of a threat on the ground than he is through the air. I still think that Cardinal teams looking to beat OP should watch that Battlefield tape.

> Power Rankings: We are staying with three teams this week, with the third team changing. The top two remain the same, however, as both won in convincing manner.

1. Woodbridge (3-0): 41-0. Yes, it was against Stafford, but still. Stafford is the team that handed Potomac its third straight loss to open the season, too.

Anyway, the Vikings rolled out player after player in the backfield in the win, even before they got up big. Of course, it didn’t take long as Woodbridge led 14-0 before the end of the first quarter. All told, eight different players ran the ball in the win. Collin Frazer just torched the Indians before leaving for a bit with a cramp. He returned shortly after to keep returning punts and torturing the Stafford offense.

2. Battlefield (4-0): Quarterback Bo Revell threw for a season-high 163 yards and Nagee Jackson scored three touchdowns against Gar-Field. I think the Bobcats have the balance they were looking for entering the season.

The offense totaled 428 yards and collected 13 first downs. Battlefield hosts Hylton Friday, the Bobcats’ fourth home game of the year. It’s going to be a tough end of the season for Battlefield, playing on the road four out of its last five games including three straight at Heritage, Stonewall and Loudoun Valley.

3. Osbourn Park (2-1): The rationale here is that the Yellow Jackets broke a 17-game losing streak against Hylton. And, that I can rank whoever I want on this blog. I’m Chevy Chase and you’re not.

Once Terrell got his running game going versus the Bulldogs he was able to keep them guessing and rack up 114 yards passing, too. From that point, Hylton didn’t know what to expect or what to try and stop.

Please go ahead and comment below. Feel free to disagree with rankings, assessments or just in general. You can also ask questions and I’ll do my best to get an answer or at least speculate.

After Wednesday, I’ll be out of the office and Friday I’ll be leaving you in the hands of staff writer Robert Daski for the live Game Time Blog at Osbourn Park.
