Guerrilla Journalism: Bumps in the road
I had a couple setbacks in my training this week.
Last Thursday, I hurt my knee while drilling takedowns.
It’s nothing serious, just a sprain. But I have to admit, I had to deal with some old demons while I limped around last weekend.
The problem is, the knee I hurt Thursday is the very same knee I sprained my ACL and MCL in during my high school football days. That was the first time I had ever really been hurt, and I didn’t handle it very well.
I was back on the field in Orange after a few weeks, but it didn’t last long. Even though it was just a sprain, that injury stuck around in the back of my head and — though I certainly wouldn’t admit it back then — I think I was scared to get hurt again.
So instead of working through my doubts, I quit.
The demons certainly weren’t as strong this past weekend, but as I winced every time I climbed a flight of steps I thought to myself, “Why are there so many steps in this damn house?” and “Is all this training and effort really worth it?”
My doubts got even worse Monday when I came down with flu-like symptoms that left me weak, hot one minute and freezing the next and severely congested and kept me out of practice Tuesday and Thursday.
The old me would probably pack it all in and take the easy way out. But that’s why he’s the old me.
The new Ron is going to get back in the gym as soon as he can breathe properly and he’s going to keep heading back there until his trainers get tired of seeing his face and kick him out.
