I wasn’t much of a fighter in my high school or college days.

Maybe a scrap here and there, but I wasn’t the kid getting kicked out of school every couple weeks for busting some heads.

In fact, I can honestly say that never in my life have I thrown as many punches as I did today. I had my first boxing session at Zamora Boxing Gym and even though I don’t have any bruises to show for it, it was definitely a trial by fire.

There were suicide sprints, ab work and tossing of a medicine ball that had me panting for air as the relatively cool morning air quickly turned into the winds that blow across the Sahara desert.

But then came the fun part. My trainer showed me how to wrap my hands and I got to dawn my “Italian Stallion” pearly white boxing gloves.

And even though those 14-ounce gloves quickly turned into what seemed like a ton of lead, I genuinely enjoyed learning the correct way to throw a jab, a straight right, a jab-straight right combination and a jab-straight right-left hook combo.

As my trainer continuously reminded me to keep my hands up, I pummeled a heavy bag and did my best to hit the little, white circles on the mitts he dawned while doing his best to get his pupil — who was just trying to keep his lungs from bursting out of his chest — to focus on foot work and technique.

I am continuously surprised at how important the hips are in just about every facet of the Mixed Martial Arts game.

In boxing most of your power, especially as it pertains to the straight right and left hook, comes from the torque created when you pivot your hips in one direction or the other. And in jujitsu, hip flexibility is paramount if you have any hope of controlling an opponent in your guard or pulling off a submission.

Nothing has been easy in Zamora’s gym — not that I expected it would be — but all the training has definitely been worth it. I haven’t lost that much weight yet, four pounds to be exact, but I definitely feel stronger.

But more importantly, I’ve learned some great techniques on my feet and the ground that should help if I ever find myself in a sticky situation and I’m beginning to get a glimpse of the dedication one must possess in and out of the gym in order to compete in any type of combat sport.
