CALM

A calm has settled over the newsroom. It is the calm that comes when the end is approaching, the beginning is far away and adrenalin just cannot keep you going any longer. We have settled into the serene stretch before the end of the race.
In the newsroom, we are working on getting our headlines together for tomorrrow’s stories, we are fielding calls from reporters out in the field, giving us last minute tidbits of information and we are just generally waiting for the end.
It seems as if this “end” has been a long time coming. It is hard to think back to the last time a day, much less a news cycle, wasn’t dominated by the names Obama and McCain.
Election Day appeared this morning as if a dream turned reality. I awoke surprised to find the dream made manifest, surrpised that Election Day was actually here.
It seems such a short time ago that George W. Bush was the focal point of all American political discussion. Now he is hardly a second thought. His power is waning and will soon come to an end.
Despite all the talk of his civil liberty infringements and the perception of an all-powerful mentality emanating from him, we all knew that Bush’s reign would come to an end. That is the beauty of our political system. Nothing is forever, though it may feel like it sometime.
And so, the election is coming to an end. Bush’s reign of power is coming to an end. This day is coming to an end. What will tomorrow bring?
