NBC projections

NBC news is projecting that John McCain has won Kentucky and Barack Obama has won Vermont. Vermont has three electoral votes and Kentucky has eight.
For those of you playing along at home, that makes the score, 8-3, advantage McCain. It’s a race to 270 electoral votes. There is a ways to go. Polls closed here in Virginia just 13 short minutes ago as of this writing.
And I’m hearing from our Communties Editor, Kari Pugh, that AP has already called the Virginia Senate race for Democrat Mark Warner.
Warner, a former governor of Virginia, was running against Republican Jim Gilmore, also a former governor of Virginia. It was the battle of the governors. Pretend that Arnold Schwarzenegger is saying that last line and it might be funny. Maybe not.
Anyway, the two former governors were battling for John Warner’s seat. John Warner is a Republican, but he was considered to be fairly moderate and was able to work with his brothers and sisters in the Democratic party.
Mark Warner was considered by many to be closer in mold to John Warner than Gilmore. Gilmore is more of a hard-core conservative and probably less inclined to compromise with his liberal counterparts.
This race was not actually expected to be close. Warner has pretty much been dominating Gilmore in all the polls up until today. He outspent Gilmore and was getting pretty solid endorsements from Democrats and Republicans. Warner was also pretty popular as governor of our state.
We look forward to seeing what he does for us in the Senate.
