Virginia

The AP is saying that Barack Obama has won Virginia, becoming the first Democrat to win the the state in a presidential election since Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1964. Vincent Paterno, a copy editor here at the News & Messenger, says that Johnson also won against an Arizona Republican—Barry Goldwater.

This is pretty momentous, to say the least. When a state, that has voted pretty consistently for the Republicans, goes over to the other side, you know that there must be some major dissatisfaction with the Republican Party.

I know it is too early to tell, but it is looking bad for John McCain. Slate.com has already called the race for Obama even though all the results are not in.

We are, of course, not going to call the race until we know for sure, but I’m starting to feel the pull of the blue tide.

Incidentally, in case any of you out there care, Maryland voters approved slot machines in their state. So, if you get bored later this year, you will probably be able to hop past Washington, D.C., and mess with the one-armed bandit in Maryland.
