About the emergency system

Culpeper County has ramped up its service when it comes to providing around-the-clock emergency personnel. In 2006, the county's Office of Emergency Services embarked upon the task of doubling its full-time, paid staff.

The county has 24 paid workers operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Before, the county only provided 12 paid staffers from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. - after that, the county's many volunteers had to take over.

Volunteers still play an active role in assisting with emergency response, however. In fact, the county has nine volunteer fire and/or rescue companies that respond to calls for service.

Culpeper has a long tradition of volunteer fire and rescue service.

Despite the newly created paid positions, longtime residents know that volunteers are still the backbone of our emergency response system. And they're always looking to beef up the ranks!
