In fact, the Public School System is the county's largest employer with more than 1,000 employees.
The county of Culpeper has just over half that amount with nearly 600 employees. Add the town of Culpeper, the U.S. Postal Service, the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Virginia State Police and other public agencies and government jobs account for some 3,428 workers countywide, according to figures from the Virginia Employment Commission.
The second largest employment industry in Culpeper is retail trade employing 2,168, the VEC reports. Wal-Mart alone employs more than 600 people and Lowe's Home Improvement has another 200.
The third-largest employment industry is health care and social assistance, providing 1,801 jobs. Culpeper Regional Hospital leads the way in that regard with some 600 employees.
Job opportunities in manufacturing are not far behind with 1,463 employed in one of Culpeper's various plants. The Merillat Corporation, a kitchen and bathroom cabinet manufacturer, employs more than 300 in its Culpeper facility.
Continental Teves, an automotive component manufacturer, is another large local industry also employing more than 300.
Not surprisingly, more than 7,000 Culpeper residents commute out of Culpeper to work, with Fauquier County and Fairfax attracting the most locals.
Another 4,449 out-of-towners commute to Culpeper for work and some 8,600 people live and work in Culpeper, according to the VEC.
